MATCH 2073 - Tuesday 14 July 2026

SEASON 2026/27

SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP - Group Stage

Venue:  LINKS PARK

MONTROSE  1  DUNDEE UNITED  0

Scorer: Webster

Attendence: 1,454

My 46th season attending football matches begins with a trip to a new ground, Links Park in the Scottish north-east town of Montrose. Not the best game as top tier Dundee United struggled to create clear chances against their tier 3 opponents which did not go down well with their good travelling support and especially one very loud mouth fan sitting a few rows behind.

Montrose is a lovely little town to visit prior to a game and has plenty of hotel opportunities to make it a pleasant stay.  It is also very accessible by car as a day trip from Dundee (30 miles) or Aberdeen (40 miles).

Match report: LINK

Personal note:

  • Links Park was the 126th ground I have attended
  • This was only the 3rd time seeing Montrose and the 136 time seeing Dundee United
  • Overall this was the 141st time attending a Scottish League Cup tie - the 11th not involving Celtic

MATCH 2043 - Sunday 14 December 2025

 SEASON 2025/26

SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP FINAL

Venue: HAMPDEN PARK

CELTIC  1  ST MIRREN  3
Scorers: Hatate; Fraser, Ayunga(2)
Attendance: 49,914

St Mirren took a very early lead but Celtic quickly got on equal terms and then looked more likely to go in front until Kelechi Iheanacho went off injured before half Tim.

In the second half it was a different story as St Mirren created the chances and took them to deservedly win the League Cup.

Personal note:
  • Overall this was the 80th time attending this fixture but the first in a Final.
  • In the Scottish League Cup this was only the 4th time seeing this fixture since 1981 with Saints winning 3 of them.

MATCH 2035 - Sunday 2 November 2025

 SEASON 2025/26

SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP Semi Final

Venue: HAMPDEN PARK

CELTIC  3  RANGERS*  1
After Extra Time
Scorers: Kenny, McGregor, Osmand;  Travernier
Attendance:  49.446

Celtic reached the Scottish League Cup final with a hard fought win over 10 man Rangers*.  Celtic dominated the first half should have had more than one goal for their efforts. However there was another crucial incident before half time when Rangers* were reduced to 10 following a stright red card.

In the second half the 10 men responded very well and played much better than when they had 11. Celtic literally paid the penalty for missing a load of chances to seal the match when Rangers* were awarded a penalty with ten minutes remaining.

It meant the game went to extra time and Celtic finally made the extra man count scoring in each half of extra time including a sweet strike from captain Callum McGregor.

 SEASON 2025/26

SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP 2nd Round

Venue:  CELTIC PARK

CELTIC  4  FALKIRK  1

Scorers:  Maeda, Johnston, Murray, O.G.;  Adams

Friday night football at Celtic Park and it was played with a good vibe Friday atmosphere.  For the home support it was an enjoyable tie with four goals to cheer as their team coasted through to the next round.  Which is not always the case against Falkirk.

This was the second season in a row the clubs had met in the League Cup at Celtic Park and it produced the same outcome.

Falkirk manager - John McGlynn.  Ex-Celtic goalkeeper, Scott Bain returned to Celtic Park as Falkirk's No 1 following his summer transfer to the Bairns.

SEASON 2024/25

SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP FINAL

Venue: HAMPDEN PARK

CELTIC  3  RANGERS*  3

(Celtic won 5-4 on penalties)

Scorers:  Taylor, Maeda, Kuhn; Bajrami, Diomande, Danilo

Cup final with six goals, extra time, penalty kicks and when the drama was all over the League Cup headed to Celtic Park.

Rangers* opened the scoring on the stroke of half time.  Celtic responded well with two early second half goals only to be quickly pegged back.  In the final five minutes there were two more goals. Celtic thought they had won it with a few minutes to play after a fine move but Rangers* instantly equalised with a great cross and solid header.

Not much happened in extra time so the drama continued onto penalty kicks.  Celtic's five kicks were perfect and Kasper Schmeichel made the vital save to quickly become a Celtic hero.

SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP

Semi Final

Venue:  HAMPDEN PARK

CELTIC  6  ABERDEEN  0

Scorers: Carter-Vickers, Kyogo, Maeda(3), Kuhn

attendance: 47,544

Celtic reached the Scottish League Cup final by putting on the style at Hampden scoring three goals in each half to record an empathic victory over Aberdeen, who are currently the second best team in Scotland.  Daizen Maeda notched an excellent Hampden hat trick.

Sitting in the second back row of the East Stand way behind the goal however it gave a good overview of the full pitch.

SEASON 2024/25

SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP Quarter Final

Venue: CELTIC PARK

CELTIC  5  FALKIRK  2

Scorers: Bernardo, Idah(2), Kuhn(2), MacIver, Yeats

Great match between two sides unbeaten in their respective leagues - Celtic in the top tier and Falkirk in the Champtionship (tier two).  Falkirk lead at half time 2-1 against a much changed Celtic starting XI however on the hour mark Celtic make four substitutions and then score four goals to take the tie away from Falkirk.

A feature of the match is Nicolas Kuhn's half hour appearance in the second half sees him make two goals, score two goals and win man of the match.

SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP 2nd Round

Venue:  CELTIC PARK

CELTIC  3  HIBERNIAN  1

Scorers: Maeda(2), Kuhn; Kukharevych

Second meeting between the Scottish Greens in eight days, this time in the League Cup.  Like last week Celtic took an early two goal lead to set up another fairly comfortable win although Hibs did at least find the back of the net this time to reduce to first half deficit to 2-1.

In the second Hibs shot themselves in the foot by conceding a very soft third goal when they had procession of the ball.

MATCH 1968 - Saturday 13 July 2024

SEASON 2024/25

SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP - Group Stage

Venue:  PALMERSTON PARK

QUEEN OF THE SOUTH  0  ABERDEEN  3

Scorers: Solker(2), Shinnie

This is the start of my 44th season attnding football matches.

The first game of new season is a trip to Dumfries for my second visit to Palmerston Park. Aberdeen have their new manager in the dugout, Jimmy Thelin for his first game while QOTS manager is former Carlisle captain, Peter Murphy.

I watched the game from th front row of the old main stand.  The first row is elevated above the dugouts giving an excellent view of the pitch.

In the first first Aberdeen dominated and took advantage of poor defending to build a three goal lead.  In the second Aberdeen continued to make good chances but couldn't add to their total.

Palmerston is a great wee ground to visit with the perfect blueprint layout of an old style ground.  Comprising of two good covered stands running the length of the either side of the pitch and terrace behing each goal - one large covered end for home fans and when required a smaller uncovered terrace for away fans.

I expected a nice drive down but it was grey skies all the way and then grey and drizzle on the road home.  Summer football in Scotland!
